Hanuman Chalisa is recited by millions of Hindus everyday for strength, courage and wisdom. Hanuman Chalisa consists of 40, there are many ways to offer prayer to Hanuman Ji, but Hanuman Chalisa, written by Tulsidas ji, is one of the best way to offer prayer to Hanuman Ji. If devotee recites Hanuman Chalisa with utmost devotion, then Hanuman Ji will protect.  verses.

Hanuman Chalisa

श्रीगुरु चरण् सरोजरज, निजमनमुकुर सुधार ।
बरणौ रघुबर बिमल यश, जो दायक फलचार ॥1

Hanuman Chalisa is considered best work by Tulsidas. Before doing any spiritual work, you always want to remember your guru. Guru can be anything or anyone. Bhagwan Dattatreya had 24 gurus; he considered animals as a guru too, cause he saw something good in them. If you don’t think of any guru in your life, you can consider your parents as your guru. With the dust of the lotus feet of my guru, I cleanse my mind, and I Narrate the Sacred Glory of Sri Raghubari (Sri Rama Chandra), who Bestows the Four Fruits of Life (Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha).

बुद्धिहीन तनु जानिके, सुमिरौं पवन कुमार ।
बल बुद्धिविद्या देहु मोहिं, हरहु कलेश विकार ॥

Pavan Kumar is another name for Hanuman Ji. Hey Pavan Kumar, I’m ignorant and I meditate on you, please grant me strength, wisdom, knowledge and remove negative thoughts from my mind. Here, one should pray with open mind, comparing to Hanuman Ji, we’re nothing. We cannot show utmost devotion like Hanuman Ji, therefore we’re asking Hanuman Ji to remove any negative thoughts, so I can submerge into Ram’ naam.

जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुण सागर ।
जै कपीस तिहुँलोक उजागर ॥1

Hanuman ji is an ocean of wisdom, and he is also en-lightener of three worlds. Three worlds: Heaven(Svarg Lok), Hell (patal Lok) and Earth (prithvi lok).

रामदूत अतुलित बलधामा ।
अंजनि–पुत्र पवन–सुत नामा ॥2

Hanuman Ji, you’re the messenger of Bhagwan Ram, you have immeasurable strength. You’re also known as Anjani Putra and Pavan Sut. Anjani was Hanumanji’s  mother’s name. Even though Kesari was Hanuman Ji’s biological father. Hanuman Ji was also known as Vayu putra(pavan sut).

महाबीर बिक्रम बजरंगी ।
कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी ॥3

Hanuman Ji was extremely valiant hero, Hanuman ji you’re dispeller of evil thoughts and companion of good sense and wisdom. Hanuman ji is also known as Bajrangi. Bajarang is made of two words: Baja + Aang; Baja is vjara and Aang means body. Meaning of Bajarang is body made of thunderbolt.

कंचन बरण बिराज सुबेशा ।
कानन कुंडल कुंचित केशा ॥4

Here Tulsidas Ji says, Hanuman Ji’s body made golden color; he wears ear-rings and have beautifully curly hair.

हाथ बज्र औ ध्वजा बिराजै ।
काँधे मूँज जनेऊ साजै ॥5

In one hand Hanuman Ji has thunderbolt and in other hand Hanuman Ji carries flag of Raam Naam. Hanuman Ji wears sacred thread across his shoulder. It has been told in Hinduism, that everyone should wear this sacred thread, cause it creates connection with supreme god.

शंकर–सुवन केशरी–नन्दन ।
तेज प्रताप महा जग–वंदन ॥6

Hanuman Ji is incarnation of Shiva and he is son of Kesari. Entire world is aware of your strength and courage. Hanuman Ji’s incarnation as Shiva, it is also described in Shiv Puran.

विद्यावान गुणी अति चातुर ।
राम काज करिबे को आतुर ॥7

Hanuman Ji, you’re extremely intelligent, and you’re always ready for work of Shri Ram. What is consider “Shri Ram’s” work has many definition!! Standing by truth or helping others is considerd as  Shri Ram’s work.

प्रभु चरित्र सुनिबे को रसिया ।
रामलषण सीता मन बसिया ॥8

Hanuman Chalisa describes that when Tulsidas used to do Ram Katha; Hanuman Ji used to come and sit in form of leaper. Hanuman Ji alwasys delighted to listen the glories of Shri Ram. On earth, Hanuman Ji has the most temple, cause Hanuman Ji received boon from Sita Ji to be present wherever there is Raam naam.

सूक्ष्म रूपधरि सियहिं दिखावा ।
विकट रूप धरि लंक जरावा ॥9

Hanuman Ji appeared to Sita Ji in tiny little form; Sita ji was curious how small being with help Shri Ram; and at this point Hanuman Ji took gigantic form and burned the lanka. This is also described in Sunderkand.

भीम रूप धरि असुर सँहारे ।
रामचन्द्र के काज सँवारे ॥10

Hanuman Ji took gigantic form and destroyed the demons; thereby accomplishing the task of Shri Ram.

लाय सजीवन लखन जियाये ।
श्री रघुबीर हरषि उर लाये ॥11

Hanuman Ji brought sanjivani from Himalaya to revive laxman Ji; because of thisi Shri Ram embraced Hanuman Ji with joy. This also shows that Ram Bhakat or Hanuman Bhakat should never believe in “chamatkar”, Shri Ram being the narayan he couldn’t revive laxman ji without proper medicine.

रघुपति कीन्ही बहुत बडाई ।
तुम मम प्रिय भरतहिसम भाई ॥12

As per above pankti, when Hanuman Ji brought sanjivani from Himalaya; Shri Ram embraced Hanuman Ji, and Shri Ram’s love for Hanuman is same as Shri Ram’s love for Bharat.

सहस बदन तुम्हरो यश गावैं ।
अस कहि श्रीपति कण्ठ लगावैं ॥13

Here सहस बदन is considered as the thousand headed Seshnag, and narayan rests on Seshnag; Laxman Ji was avatar of Seshnag, thus explains why Laxman Ji accompanied Shri Ram in 14 years of exile. The thousand headed Seshnag also sings glory of Hanuman Ji.

सनकादिक ब्रह्मादि मुनीशा ।
नारद शारद सहित अहीशा ॥14

सनकादिक mean sanatkumar, Bhrama, Naarad and Devi Saraswati sings glory of Hanuman Ji.

यम कुबेर दिगपाल जहाँते ।
कवि कोविद कहि सकैं कहाँते ॥15

यम is the god of the death, कुबेर is the god of wealth; poets of scholars have not been able to describe glories of Hanuman Ji.

तुम उपकार सुग्रीवहिं कीन्हा ।
राम मिलाय राजपद दीन्हा ॥16

Vali used to rule Kishkindha, due to his fight with demon; Vali had to enter cave, Sugriv stand outside the cave and saw blood stream coming out, and Sugriv thought Vali is dead; Sugriv sealed the cave and started ruling Kishkinda. Aftersome time, Vali returned and Vali captured Sugriv’s wife and started ruling Kishkinda. Hanuman Ji introduced Sugriv to Shri Ram, and with the help of shri Ram, Sugriv got his kingdom back.

तुम्हरो मंत्र विभीषण माना ।
लंकेश्वर भये सब जग जाना ॥17

Vibhisana was great devotee of Shri Ram living in Lanka. When Hanuman Ji met Vibhisan in Lanka; Hanuman Ji saw Ram name and saw tree of Tulsi. Hanuman Ji advised Vibhisan that you’re considering Ram in your prayer, but you’re not doing the work of Shri Ram. Raavan abducted Sita ji, but has Vibhisan ever opposed that? After Hanuman Ji burned down the Lanka, Vibhisan went to showed his displeasure about abducting Sita ji and then Raavan kicked him out of Lanka, then Vibhisan went straight to Shri Ram, and Shri Ram right away make him king of Lanka even before winning over Raavan.

युग सहस्र योजन पर भानू ।
लील्यो ताहि मधुर फल जानू ॥18

Tulsidas here gives accurate distance between sun and the earth that without help of any modern technology. 1 युग = 12000 years, 1 सहस्र = 1000, 1 योजन = 12-15 km. 12000 x 1000 x 12.5 = 150,000,000 km; which is close to what NASA predicts of 149,600,000 km. This is the main reason I have strong faith in our shastra and not in any sadhus of sampradays. Hanuman Ji saw the sun at the distance and swallowed it thinking it to be sweet fruit.

प्रभु मुद्रिका मेलि मुख माहीं ।
जलधि लाँधि गये अचरजनाहीं ॥19

When Hanuman Ji left to find Sita Ji, Shri Ram gave Hanuman a ring to give Sita Ji as a hint. Hanuman Ji took the ring of Shri Ram and crossed ocean; based on Hanuman Ji’s ability this is very small feat.

दुर्गम काज जगत के जेते ।
सुगम अनुग्रह तुम्हरे तेते ॥20

With Hanuman Ji’s grace, all difficult tasks in this world can become easy.

राम दुआरे तुम रखवारे ।
होत न आज्ञा बिन पैसारे ॥21

After Shri Ram returned to Ayodhya, Hanuman Ji was the gate-keeper of Ayodhya and without Shri Ram’s permission nobody can enter kingdom, not even and dev or devi.

सब सुख लहै तुम्हारी सरना ।
तुम रक्षक काहू को डरना ॥22

If you pray to Hanuman Ji with strong believe and faith, Hanuman Ji will become your protector.

आपन तेज सम्हारो आपै ।
तीनों लोक हाँकते काँपै ॥23

Energy of Hanuman ji is so bright that it can spread to every corner of earth. When Hanuman Ji Roars, all three worlds tremble, after all he was avatar of Parmeshvar Shankar.

भूत पिशाच निकट नहिं आवै ।
महाबीर जब नाम सुनावै ॥24

Evil spirits doesn’t come near you when you utters name of Hanuman Ji. This is believed throughout India; Hanuman Ji considers reliever from evil spirits.

नाशौ रोग हरै सब पीरा ।
जपत निरन्तर हनुमत बीरा ॥25

This is very much true; your good health is your greatest wealth. If you pray or chant Hanuman Ji’s name in your every day life, you will never fall for any life threatening disease. This can only happen if you pray with utmost devotion. Hanuman Ji will destroy all diseased and remove you from paint, if you pray name of Hanuman Ji with utmost devotion.

संकट से हनुमान छुडावै ।
मन क्रम बचन ध्यान जो लावै ॥26

Hanuman Ji will free you from all difficulties, when you meditates on him with mind, deed and words.

सब पर राम तपस्वी राजा ।
तिनके काज सकल तुम साजा ॥27

Shri Ram who is the king of all tapaswis; Hanuman Ji will fulfill works of Shri Ram.

और मनोरथ जो कोइ लावै ।
सोइ अमित जीवन फल पावै ॥28

If person desire for anything; chanting Hanuman Ji’s name will great you your desire.

चारों युग परताप तुम्हारा ।
है परसिद्ध जगत उजियारा ॥29

Glory of Hanuman Ji is spreaded in all four ages; and fame of Hanuman Ji radiates throughout the world.

साधु संत के तुम रखवारे ।
असुर निकंदन राम दुलारे ॥30

Hanuman Ji is the saviour of saints and sages, Hanuman ji destroys the demons for Shri Ram.

अष्टसिद्धि नव निधि के दाता ।
अस बर दीन जानकी माता ॥31

Sometime we wonder how Hanuman Ji was able to take tiny form and within a next second gigantic form. In Hinduism, we have 8 siddhis and 9 niddhis. Siddhis and niddhis grants you power. Some of this siddhis include ability to take any form, become light as feather of as strong as vajra. Hanuman Ji is the bestower of 8 siddhis and 9 niddhis.

राम रसायन तुम्हरे पासा ।
सदा रहो रघुपति के दासा ॥32

Hanuman Ji is the symbol of devotion; Hanuman Ji, please always remain as the servant of Shri Ram.

तुम्हरे भजन रामको पावै ।
जन्म ��न्म के दुख बिसरावै ॥33

Through the devotion of Hanuman Ji, one can reach to Shri Ram. Tulsidas with the help of Hanuman Ji met Shri Ram. Hanuman Ji guided Tulsidas to go to Chitrakut to see Shri Ram. Below slok is also very famous; it is when Tulsidas was at Chitrakut and Shri Ram applied chandan on forehead of Tulsidas.

चित्रकूट के घाट पर हुई संतन की भीड़, तुलसीदास चन्दन घिसे, तिलक देते रघुबीर

अन्त काल रघुपति पुर जाई ।
जहाँ जन्म हरिभक्त कहाई ॥34

If we take Ram name in our last breath, then we will surely reach to Shri Ram, and we will forever be known as devotee of Hari.

और देवता चित्त न धरई ।
हनुमत सेइ सर्व सुख करई ॥35

This is specially for all those people who believe in other devtas; your full faith and trust in Hanuman Ji is enough to receive all happiness. It also indicates person shouldn’t be superstitious.

संकट हरै मिटै सब पीरा ।
जो सुमिरै हनुमत बल बीरा ॥36

Difficulties disappear and sorrows are removed for those who contemplate on Hanuman Ji.

जै जै जै हनुमान गोसाई ।
कृपा करहु गुरुदेव की नाई ॥37

Victory to you O Hanuman; please bestow your grace as our supreme guru.

जोह शत बार पाठ कर जोई ।
छुटहि बन्दि महासुख होई ॥38

Those who recites this Hanuman Chalisa one hundred times with utmost devotion; will get freed from Worldy bondage and get great happiness.

जो यह पढै हनुमान चालीसा ।
होय सिद्धि साखी गौरीसा ॥39

Those who read this Hanuman Chalisa will become perfect and Lord Shiva is the witness. Shiva is the permeshavar, any prayer, no matter to who to pray, is fruitless if you don’t remember Lord Shiva.

तुलसीदास सदा हरि चेरा ।
कीजै नाथ हृदय महँ डेरा ॥40

Tulsidas, who wrote Hanuman Chalisa, who is always the servant of lotus feet of Hari; asks the lord to reside in our heart.

पवनतनय संकट हरन,
मंगल मूरति रूप ।
रामलषन सीता सहित,
हृदय बसहु सुरभूप ॥

O Hanuman Ji, who removes difficulties, who has an auspicious form. Please always reside in our heart with Shri Ram, Shri Lakshmana and Sita Ji.
